Deforestation: Kelethin to Freeport Betrayal

Hello, people of Faydwer. Recent changes in your land *cough*Game Update #32*cough* have caused wonderful things to happen. One of these changes is that it now seems that some of you have finally found the chutzpah to pack up and get on the first train out of Dullsville. You've got the stones to say goodbye to that backwater, podunk, embarrassing excuse for a "city", Kelethin. I say, "Good for you"! You've got grit! You've got moxie! You've got more than half a brain in your gourd unlike the rest of your awful, tree-hugging brethren!

Go-getters like you are always welcome in Freeport. I really think you'll prefer it here. Our compensation package is very competitive. The amenities are second to none and I think that you'll find our benefits to suit your needs quite nicely. 401k matching, dental, group health care, flexible spending accounts, the works. And we guarantee no less than a 90% decrease of floaty twinkly sparkly...things in your environment. But desire alone isn't enough. You need to have drive. Fire. You need to have that special quality that says "Hey, I'm Freeport material". Some people call it 'grit'. Some people call it 'daring' or 'determination'. Some people call it 'willing to stab living things vigorously and indiscriminately when the situation calls for it and sometimes even when it really honestly doesn't'. Whatever you call it, if you've got what it takes then we've got a place for you in our community. Kudos on your decision and good luck.

See ya in Freeport,
Stugein

-= Necessary Components =-
Your quest to leave Kelethin begins with Saelir Varryn. Saelir is located on one of the south-eastern platforms of the city at +224, +112, +400.

You say, "Hail, Saelir Varryn"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Greetings. Enjoying your stroll? No, I don't suppose you would be."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Why do you say that?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"How can anyone enjoy it here? This city is stifling. Don't you feel it?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Yeah, I think I do. It's like they don't trust me to be as good as they are."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Yes! It is so disrespectful, don't you think?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Yes."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Ah. It's so refreshing to finally meet someone who agrees. Everyone else frowns at me and tells me I'm unpatriotic. One even had the nerve to ask me where my parents were! I swear, one day I'm going to show them all!"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"How were you going to do that?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Well... I have my plans. I don't see why that would matter to you though."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Well, maybe I'd like to show them all as well."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Heh... yeah. Yeah... All right, we can do this together, partner. And when all is said and done, we'll leave Kelethin behind and strike out on our own, eh?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I'm in."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Great. So here's my plan. They always insult my lack of experience. I haven't seen the world as they have, and as such am naive and make foolish decisions. Well, I'd like to poke fun at the foolishness they adhere to. Despite their "enlightened" and "experienced tempered" view on life, they still hold to pointlessly impractical rituals."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"What do you mean?"
Saelir Varryn:Saelir Varryn says to you,"Have you ever heard of Sammial Geravius?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"No, who is he?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"He's an artist. A gnome. He's lived in Kelethin all his life. He... well, he's got technical talent, I won't argue that, but his work is so disgustingly sentimental. His work is specifically made to remind people of what makes them sad, and because of that he earns praise. All he's doing is exploiting emotions. His latest atrocity is something he calls Sul Spheres."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"What's a Sul Sphere?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"A glass sphere that he fills with dyes and magicks. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but he claims to somehow capture the essence of a relative that's passed on and imbue it into the sphere. The only reason people buy them is because they feel bad for having lost a loved one and believe that this will fill the void. They believe that because this is what he tells them. "Keep their memory close with a Sul Sphere," I've heard him say. It's exploitive."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"So what do you want to do about it?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"I want to laugh in the face of everyone who buys into this pretentious junk. If I'm the naive one, then why are they the ones who are spending their valuable gold on a glass ball with color inside? Because they're fools. I am going to sneak into the Fae Royal Court to steal some Post Mortem Declarations of Honor, I think that will help with my message. Deeds are real, globes are... globes. While I do that I'd like you to gather some of the components necessary to work Sammial's machine that creates the Sul Spheres."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"What are the components?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"First you'll need a red-blooded and yellow-blooded mushroom from the forest floor near Tunare's Sapling Lift. You'll also need some purple berries, you can purchase those from Restauranteur Brizeyl Myrika over in Joleena's Restaurant. Finally you'll need a handful of seeds from the reedmace down on the Green Gnoll, just north west of the Fae Royal Court."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"All right, I'll gather them."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Great. I'll meet you back here once I've stolen the declarations."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"All right."

Alright. So Saelir has a mad on for people who like to be reminded of their dead family members. A little creepy but who are we to judge, right? Saelir asks that we gather four components to kick off his creepy master plan. They are as follows:

Once you have all of the components that Saelir requires, head back to see how he made out with his task to steal the documents that he wanted.

-= Stealing the Declarations =-
Ok. So we've tossed our hat in with Saelir and decided to help him really stick it to the grieving fools here in Kelethin. We've gone around and gathered the components that he needs to set his plan into motion and all he had to do was snag a stack of papers from some pencil pusher's desk. He couldn't possibly screw that up...could he?

You say, "Hail, Saelir Varryn"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Well? Did you collect all the materials?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Yes, I have collected the materials."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Good. Unfortunately I was ejected from the Fae Royal court. They won't let me back in. I was, erm, a little rude once I got inside."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"What did you say?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"That's not important. Needless to say I feel dumb for having done it and they're not letting me back in there anytime soon. I need you to go get the declarations."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Fine. Where are they?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Somewhere in the Fae royal court. And don't..."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"... don't do what you did?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Right. While you're doing that I'm going to research whose Sul Spheres I'd like to steal."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"All right. I'll return."

OK, so the twit did screw up. What do you expect from someone who probably spent his whole life in a tree? I mean, I wouldn't expect him to be able to tie his shoes let alone commit a daring daylight robbery. Ah well. You'll just have to do it yourself.

The declaration documents that you need are located in the Fae Royal Court. You will find them upstairs in a cabinet like this one located at +397.14, +145.23, +155.95. The cabinets are not locked and nobody will even attempt to stop you. If the atmosphere wasn't so nauseatingly sweet you might be able to make a good living as a security consultant in this town. Take the declarations back to Saelir.

-= The Sul Spheres =-
Despite Saelir's ineptitude we've managed to secure the documents and the other components needed to corrupt the Sul Sphere process. All we need now are some Sul Spheres. Shouldn't be too hard to come by in this town. These people seem to put up memorials for everything from fallen heroes to the left sock that they lost in the wash. It's like a marblesmith's wet dream. In any case, let's see what Saelir's research turned up, shall we?

You say, "Hail, Saelir Varryn"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Did you manage to get the declarations?"
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Yes, I have the declarations."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Good work. Now we need only collect the Sul Spheres and we can act."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"You still haven't told me what your plan is."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Well, like I said, I want to laugh at those who buy into this foolishness. What I'd like to do is break the Sul Spheres they hold so dear. I'd like to think that such an act would snap them into their senses, but I doubt that will happen. At the least, I will call out the emotion they will ooze forth at the destruction of an inanimate object."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"They won't listen."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"It is the duty of an artist to be misunderstood, Naeja. Some will see what I'm saying, and they'll know we're right. That is enough for me."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"So what must we do?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Once we have the Sul Spheres we're going to sneak into Sammial's apartment at Aerie Kolmas. We've already acquired the components we'll need to use the machine. I've read up on the inner workings of it and know a way to overload its controls in such a way that we can destroy the Sul Spheres we place inside. Then we'll place the essay I've written, along with the Post-Mortem Declarations of Honor, near the machine for the guards to find."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"And run?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Yes, then we run. We don't want to get caught doing this, but we do want them to know it was us. We'll sign our names at the bottom of the essay. To show them how serious I am, I will be destroying my Great Uncle Saayes' Sul Sphere. My parents bought one despite my objections."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"They will be pretty mad."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Well... I'll just get them another Sul Sphere, that seemed to do well enough to stifle their emotions when he died. And if they are mad, and embrace their anger, then I'll have done them a favor."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I suppose. What do I need to do?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Collect the Sul Spheres. I've taken care to find a number of Sul Spheres that were made for well known people, this way it won't just affect their immediate families. First, I'd like you to steal the Sul Sphere of Hiraen Aravirta. He was a poet of much renown. His Sul Sphere is kept by his son, Eljas. He is a scribe and can be found near the bank."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Ok."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Next, I'd like you to steal the Sul Sphere of The Greenlight. His true name has been lost, but his legend lives on--and his Sul Sphere is held by the Protector's of Growth, near Gearheart's Forge. Legend names him a great philanthropist, he has done a great deal for Kelethin."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"All right."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Then I'd like you to travel to the House of Falling Stars. They hold the Sul Sphere of Maayiri Ellia. She was one of Kelethin's first citizens and helped create policies and rules which are still followed to this day."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Ok."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Finally, I'd like you to collect the Sul Sphere of Jyoril Maarson. His love for Alaya Meriaan was legendary. Countless males from every generation following his have tried in vain to reuse his poetry to woo women of their own, but none could ever match the eloquence of Jyoril the Warrior-Poet. He was slain in combat with orcs before he and Alaya could ever marry. His Sul Sphere is now held by Alaya's daughter, Bettina Meriaan."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Ok."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Once you have collected all the Sul Spheres return to me. I will have written the essay and my great uncle's Sul Sphere. Then we can move."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I will return."

Now we have to run around town stealing Sul Spheres of notable citizens. Given the airtight security displayed by the people of Hippyville so far, I don't see this as being a huge problem. Saelir gives you a list of four Sul Spheres that are of particular interest. Listed in the order that seems to save you the most running around and backtracking:

You've now collected all the Sul Spheres that Saelir seems to think will be useful in making his grand statement to the people of Kelethin. Take them back to your cohort so that he can finally realize the fruits of his your labor.

-= Following Through =-
We've got the components to work the machine. We've got the declaration documents. We've got celebrity Sul Spheres. Let's do this!

------------------
POINT OF NO RETURN
------------------
At this point you will be given the opportunity to turn back. Betrayal is not something that should be taken lightly and this is the part where you are warned as to what exactly will happen if you go forward from here. You will be kill-on-sight to Kelethin, Qeynos, and Freeport. You will lose anything that you leave in your vaults and home. When and if you are finally accepted into Freeport, your class will change to it's Freeportian counterpart and all your spells and skills will be downgraded back to Apprentice I quality no matter how much cash you spent upgrading them, and you may lose the ability to wear some of your gear (if it was class-specific). If this is all fine by you and you are willing to take on the life of an exile, enter your name into the box and accept the next quest. If you are a big loser then this is your chance to turn around and forget the whole affair.
------------------

You say, "Hail, Saelir Varryn"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Hi, Naeja."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I have the Sul Spheres."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"I... yes."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"What is it?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"There was a portrait of my great uncle next to his Sul Sphere. I had forgotten what he looked like."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Are you chickening out on me?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"No! I... I just. I don't know. I don't think I can go through with this."
[Editor's note: Wussiest revolutionary EVER.]
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Why not?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"It's so... I mean yeah, I think it's silly to purchase a globe to remind ourselves of our loved ones, but who am I to tell an entire city that what they're doing is wrong? This was MY great uncle, Naeja. I didn't think doing something like this would affect me, but I don't think I can destroy his Sul Sphere. I can't explain it, but maybe you know what I mean."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Yes, I know exactly what you mean. You're giving up!"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"No! I'm not giving up, I still have my issues with Kelethin. I just don't think THIS is the proper way to make my statement."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"How can you say that NOW?"
Saelir Varryn says to you,"I don't know... I just... I saw that picture of my great uncle staring down at me and I guess I realized that absolutely no good was going to come of this."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Well I'M still going to do it, with or without your help."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Fine... but you can't take my great uncle's Sul Sphere."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"Whatever. Give me that essay."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"I didn't sign it."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I don't care. I'll sign it. You can stay here and figure out your emotions, I'm going to pay Sammial's apartment a visit."
Saelir Varryn says to you,"Fine, but you'll regret it."
You say to Saelir Varryn,"I doubt it."

Head over to the Kelethin residential district. Sammial lives in an apartment complex named Aerie Kolmas which is located at +383.70, +105.83, +505.53. Right-click the door and "Sammial's Apartment" should be an option for you. Zone in.

Saelir's instructions are very clear and it would be tough even for a ranger to screw it up. All of the steps are accomplished by simple right-clicks. Follow the instructions as they are laid out in your journal:

  1. Set the injection barrel to ready.
  2. Set the exhaust barrel to ready.
  3. Place the reedmace seeds into the injection barrel.
  4. Grab the bowl off of the workbench table to mix the 'shrooms and berries then place them in the injection barrel.
  5. Place the honor declarations and Saelir's essay on the workbench.
  6. Place the Sul Spheres in the main chamber of Sammial's machine.
After completing the steps above you will be instructed to use the control bench to overload the machine and then to destroy the Sul Spheres. Do so, then leave back out to the main chamber. You will find that you have been discovered and that the exit is now blocked by Major Vyr and two fae guards. Trying to access the door (if you have stealth) is fruitless and Major Vyr will tell you so. Approach the contingent of guards and listen to Vyr's admonishment. At this point you are roughed up and ejected from Kelethin. You wake up in Haven...
